ভূগােলের ধারণা (Concept of geography) আমরা পৃথিবীতে বাস করি। পৃথিবী আমাদের আবাসভূমি। মানুষের আবাসভূমি হিসেবে পৃথিবীর বর্ণনা হলাে ভূগােল। ইংরেজি 'Geography' শব্দটি থেকে ভূগােল শব্দ এসেছে। প্রাচীন গ্রিসের ভূগােলবিদ ইরাটসথেনিস প্রথম ‘Geography' শব্দ ব্যবহার করেন। Geo' ও ‘graphy শব্দ দুটি মিলে হয়েছে 'Geography। Geo' শব্দের অর্থ ‘ভূ' বা পৃথিবী এবং “graphy' শব্দের অর্থ বর্ণনা। সুতরাং 'Geography' শব্দটির অর্থ পৃথিবীর বর্ণনা। পৃথিবী আবার মানুষের আবাসভূমি। অধ্যাপক ম্যাকনি (Professor E. A. Macnee) মানুষের আবাসভূমি হিসেবে পৃথিবীর আলােচনা বা বর্ণনাকে বলেছেন ভূগােল। তার মতে ভৌত ও সামাজিক পরিবেশে মানুষের কর্মকাণ্ড ও জীবনধারা নিয়ে যে বিষয় আলােচনা করে তাই ভূগােল। অধ্যাপক ডাডলি স্ট্যাম্পের (Professor L. Dudley Stamp) মতে, পৃথিবী ও এর অধিবাসীদের বর্ণনাই হলাে ভূগােল। কোনাে কোনাে ভূগােলবিদ ভূগােলকে বলেছেন পৃথিবীর বিবরণ, কেউ বলেছেন পৃথিবীর বিজ্ঞান। অধ্যাপক কার্ল রিটার (Professor Carl Ritter) ভূগােলকে বলেছেন পৃথিবীর বিজ্ঞান। ভূগােল একদিকে প্রকৃতির বিজ্ঞান আবার অন্যদিকে পরিবেশ ও সমাজের বিজ্ঞান। প্রকৃতি, পরিবেশ ও সমাজ সম্পর্কে বিশেষ জ্ঞান হলাে ভূগােলের আলােচ্য বিষয়। রিচার্ড হার্টশােন (Richard Hartshorne) বলেন, পৃথিবীপৃষ্ঠের পরিবর্তনশীল বৈশিষ্ট্যের যথাযথ যুক্তিসংগত ও সুবিন্যস্ত বিবরণের সঙ্গে সংশ্লিষ্ট বিষয় হলাে ভূগােল। যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের ওয়াশিংটন ডিসির বিজ্ঞান একাডেমি ১৯৬৫ সালে ভূগােলের একটি সংজ্ঞা দিয়েছে। এর মতে, পৃথিবীপৃষ্ঠে প্রাকৃতিক পরিবেশের উপব্যবস্থাগুলাে কীভাবে সংগঠিত এবং এসব প্রাকৃতিক বিষয় বা অবয়বের সঙ্গে মানুষ নিজেকে কীভাবে বিন্যস্ত করে তার ব্যাখ্যা খোজে ভূগােল। আলেকজান্ডর ফন হামবােল্টর (Alexander Von Humbolt) মতে, ভূগােল হলাে প্রকৃতির সঙ্গে সম্পর্কিত বিজ্ঞান, প্রকৃতিতে যা কিছু আছে তার বর্ণনা ও আলােচনা এর অন্তর্ভুক্ত। মানুষ পৃথিবীতে বাস করে এবং এই পৃথিবীতেই তার জীবনযাত্রা নির্বাহ করে। পৃথিবীর প্রাকৃতিক পরিবেশ তার জীবনযাত্রাকে প্রভাবিত করে। পৃথিবীর জলবায়ু, ভূপ্রকৃতি, উদ্ভিদ, প্রাণী, নদ-নদী, সাগর, খনিজ সম্পদ তার জীবনযাত্রাকে বিভিন্নভাবে প্রভাবিত করে। তার ক্রিয়াকলাপ তার পরিবেশে ঘটায় নানান রকম পরিবর্তন।
Concept of Geography The word geography is derived from two Greek words 'geo' (earth) and 'graphy (description). But the discipline does not simply describe the earth, it explores the planet as peoples, habitat. Eratosthenes was the first Greek scholar who used the term geography' as the study of earth as human habitat. Professor E.A Macnee said, geography is the study of environment of man both physical and social, particularly in its relation to human activites.' Professor L. Dudley Stamp has defined geography as, 'A description of the world and of its inhabitants.' Professor Carl Ritter said, that geography is concerned with the objects on the earth's surface around man. Geography is the science of nature, environment and social science. According to Richard Hartshorne, geography provides accurate, orderly and rational description and interpretation of the variable character of the earth's surface.' Academy of Science of Washington D.C. gave a definition of Geography in 1965. According to them, Geography searches for how the sub-management of natural environment of the surface and how human beings adjust themselves with these natural phenomena or physical body. People live in this world and lead their life on it. The natural environment influences their way of living. Climate, physical features, natural vegetation, animals, rivers, seas, and mineral resources which influence the life of the people in different ways. Activities of man change the environment, such as, their homes, roads, ports and cities change the nature and environment in different ways. Settlement is built by cutting trees, by filling up canals, wetlands, and ponds. There is interaction between man and environment. The main function of geography is to find out the cause of interaction between man and environment.
